If you've got a minute for a short walk through the Sonoran Desert, check out this 3D Minute, containing four desert vistas, all shot in stereoscopic video. You'll notice a few varieties of cactus, including the cholla cactus, with its loose spiny burrs (above). In the background you can see one of the more distinctive cacti found in this part of the country: the saguaro cactus - a tall pillar of a plant with outgrowths that mimic arms. Over time, this cactus may begin to lean over as it experiences damage or erosion. It grows these "arms" to offset the lean and restabilize the cactus so that it points straight up.
