![]() This little guy is Mahal. He was brought to the Milwaukee County Zoo in February from the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs, CO., after being rejected by his mother, Hadiah. Keepers suggest that her age - just 10 years old, barely an adult herself - may have played a role in her rejection of the baby. Additionally, his father treated Mahal as if he were a threat. The baby primate was also born with a physical deformity similar to a club foot, which made it difficult for him to cling to his mother. A few months ago, a surrogate mom was found for him at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. They bonded quickly. Unfortunatly, she died in her sleep soon after. Of the 6 potential surrogate mothers available in North America, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums then chose MJ, a 27-year old female hybrid Bornean-Sumatran orangutan at the Milwaukee zoo, for the job. After about two months, the two appear to be getting along famously. Mahal's existence and ability to thrive and eventually reproduce could be very important for the survival of his species. Some experts estimate that orangutans could be extinct in the wild in 10 years. Mahal will turn 1 year old on April 4th.
