Known for their unique mottled pattern, these African Wild Dogs (also known as Cape Hunting Dogs) are wolf-like in nature, typically traveling and hunting in packs of up to 20 in the grasslands of Africa. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, these dogs are threatened by extinction. There are fewer than 5000 of them left in the wild and around 500 in captivity, their decline the result of less abundant prey and habitat, disease, and persecution by man.
