This bird uses it's long beak to hunt for fish, frogs, snakes, and other shallow-water dwellers, as well as mice and insects. An expert fisherman, the heron stands still for very long periods of time, until its prey comes within striking distance. Although it can be easily identified by its "S" shaped neck and size (4-foot stature and 6-7 foot wingspan), the heron is likely to weigh only 5-8 pounds, due to having hollow bones. The great blue heron has remained strong in numbers, less affected by plume hunters and pesticides than other heron varieties.
