What is it that periodically kills off about a third of the wild lion population in parts of Africa?  Dr. Karen A. Terio, a researcher with the University of Illinois Zoological Pathology Program, discussess her recent study, which found that wild lions periodically suffer heavy losses when they encounter a "perfect storm" of environmental and biological conditions. In this extended interview, Dr. Terio also talks about her background and other work.  (For a preview of this topic, see Newscast #38.)

This bird uses it's long beak to hunt for fish, frogs, snakes, and other shallow-water dwellers, as well as mice and insects.  An expert fisherman, the heron stands still for very long periods of time, until its prey comes within striking distance.  Although it can be easily identified by its "S" shaped neck and size (4-foot stature and 6-7 foot wingspan), the heron is likely to weigh only 5-8 pounds, due to having hollow bones.  The great blue heron has remained strong in numbers, less affected by plume hunters and pesticides than other heron varieties.  Click the arrow below to watch the great blue heron in it's natural environment.
